Many people have used a computer and a microphone to record a human voice or other sounds. The process involves sampling the sound that is heard by the computer at a very high rate (at least 8,000 times per second or more) and storing those “samples” in memory or in a file on the computer. Each sample of sound is just a very tiny bit of the person’s voice or other sound recorded by the computer. The computer has the wherewithal to take all of those samples and play them, so that the listener can hear what was recorded.

Voice over internet protocol services is based on the same idea, but the difference is that the audio samples are not stored locally. Instead, they are sent over the IP network to another computer and played there.

5)      How cost competitive are you on the mobile side of things compared with your competitors?

We do not know real SPIRIT competition today, who cover all the platforms, like SPIRIT does. We see small competitive pieces here and there against SPIRIT’s complete and integrated product line. SPIRIT is not the cheapest vendor, but the quality and reliability justify the cost and saves crucial time-to-market. Viber particularly wanted to launch before Christmas.

In practice, SPIRIT does help customers of all ranges – with paid service to their subscribers, and customers who (like Viber) are today offering free services to their users. So SPIRIT is flexible when it comes to licensing models. I would say that today SPIRIT’s voice and video engine today is like Mercedes in cars with full product range for any road and case, complete functionality, great quality and a reasonable price.

6)      What technological advantages does SPIRIT DSP have over competitors?

7)      Do you have any technical statistics or can you describe how you handle latency, jitter, packet loss concealment and echo cancellation? E.g. “Spirit DSP introduces about 20ms of latency on the iPhone, which is minimal. Further, with superb packet loss concealment there is very little jitter. We have an excellent software-based echo canceller with our proprietary algorithms.”

Full-duplex, rich, wideband voice is our traditional strength, which is provided by SPIRIT’s IP-MR proprietary wideband codec. IP-MR delivers 4.2-4.5 MOS voice quality without packet loss, and 3.1 MOS voice quality with 30% packet loss at 15 kbps, only half of its maximum bitrate. The overall quality of the solution is also secured by a dozens of additional high-precision DSP algos working in adaptive ways. 8)      Does Spirit DSP do anything “special” with regards to Bluetooth headsets to improve quality? Probably not. The API to communicate with the Bluetooth headset is probably pretty standard.

Support for different IO devices and mode switching is definitely supported in the SPIRIT SDK.

In this article I will be discussing the benefits (there are few features that I wish were incorporated into this device that are not, however I do not discredit this machine in anyway as the low cost justifies its minimal shortcomings) and overall functionality of the Polycom IP 560 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) VoIP phone. Generally speaking this phone should be considered one of the best mid-tier telephony devices available today due to its comparatively speaking, low cost and simplicity in regards to deployment.
The Polycom IP 560 comes standard with everything you could need to design and roll out a productive and low cost Voice Over IP solution. With an available four SIP lines per machine, the growing need be able to manage elevated call volume without sacrificing the potential for revenue generating prospects is greatly reduced.

Users are able to connect to the device with any wired RJ9 compatible headset. I do wish that this phone had wireless capability but as I’m usually right here at my desk I feel that I don’t really need it. Some of the much more expensive models offer this feature however I do not feel that the significantly increased priced model justifies such a, while useful, small feature.

One of the most useful features of these devices is that they can be provisioned hundreds at a time! Consider rolling out fifty SIP phones in a small / medium sized office. It can be a time consuming process to manually configure each of them one by one. The IP 560 allows for “Mass Provisioning” using DHCP assigned IP address and each machines MAC address resulting in the ability to configure an unlimited number of phones in seconds.

Primarily, the majority of hosted and non-hosted ITSPs (Internet Telephony Service Provider) prefer the G.711%u03BClaw and G.729alaw codecs when negotiating with a VoIP client. The IP 560 offers both G.711%u03BC as well as the G.729 codec. G.722 is also available how not as dominant in the VoIP community.

Purchase an Ethernet phone switch (see Resources). Research the best phone switch for your needs before you purchase.

Connect the Ethernet phone switch to your computer. The Ethernet phone switch has two jacks. One jack connects a LAN to a phone jack. The other jack connects the PC to the phone jack.

Connect the transformer cords into the slots. These slots are labeled to help you connect these cords correctly. The cords connect from the Ethernet switch to the computer.
